On Repeat: A Tribute to Aaliyah
Aaliyah Dana Haughton redefined R&B and urban culture from the late 90′s all the way up until she left us on August 25, 2001. We all grew up writing four-page letters to boys, imitating her signature swoop bang, learning her dance moves with friends and banging on our classroom desks to the beat of “Are You That Somebody.” It’s crazy to think that one artist had this much impact on all of our lives, whether we realized it or not.
Aaliyah was only 22 when she died, but she had already accomplished so much. The most painful thing about her passing to many was the fact that we never got the opportunity to find out what else she would have contributed to the world. Regardless, the songs she made are timeless. Her beauty and talent, too. No matter how many imitators come around (they have and will continue to emerge), we all know that there will only be one Aaliyah. Reminisce with me…
